This ring design has a really excellent tutorial and the information on annealing, soldering, etc would be applicable to any silversmithing project involving these steps. I find that often the pickle does not remove all the firescale (a hard, dull looking layer which forms on the surface when silver is annealed or soldered). In that case it is necessary to file it all off because as long as firescale remains the piece of jewellery will not polish properly and will tarnish very easily.
