A brooch is a decorative jewelery item designed to be attached to garments, sometimes used to hold them closed. Brooches are usually made of silver or gold, sometimes bronze or another metal. They are often decorated with enamel or gemstones. Nowadays, some DIY brooches are also made from fabric and recycled materials. Many sorts of European brooches found in archaeology are usually referred to by the Latin term fibula. These fibula are ornamental clasps used by Romans, Greeks, Germanic peoples, Celts and migratory tribes, in Europe from the Early Bronze Age.

By the 18th century, brooches became an important clothing accessory to fasten finery (feathers and fabric). In the 19th century, with the expansion of wealth and the creation of a market for vast quantities of inexpensive jewelry, brooches became a popular commercial form. Today, brooches provide the chance to add a touch of vintage jewelry to any ensemble. Brooches have been trending again on red carpets and in fashion magazines in the past few years. As their popularity grows again in the fashion world, it is safe to say that DIY brooches are sure to become staple pieces in homemade jewelry collections.
