How to Make a Macrame Bracelet

Getting Started

  1. Cut a doubled-up piece of cord that is long enough to wrap around your wrist, plus an additional 3 to 4 inches, for the core of your bracelet.

  2. With the piece of cord folded in half, pull the fold through a decorative link, then pull the tails of the cord through the loop to anchor it to the link. This will give you something to hold on to when finishing the bracelet. If you do not wish to use the link, you can tie a simple knot a few millimeters from the end of the fold, which will leave a loop at the end of your cord.

  3. Attach your cords to Beadalon’s Tying Station by securing the decorative link beneath the wing nut. Then, anchor the tails of the cord to the other end of the Tying Station. If you are not using the Tying Station, you can clip the end of your cord onto a clipboard, or simply pin or tape the cord onto a steady surface.

  4. Cut a second piece of cord, approximately twice the length of your arm. Find the center of the cord by folding in half, then tie around the core cord.

Flat Macrame Bracelet Using Square Knots

After completing the steps under "Getting Started," continue:

  1. Cross the right tail over the center cord.

  2. Then, the left side of the cord goes over the piece from the right side.

  3. Next, the left cord will travel under the center cord and up through the right side loop.

  4. Grab each tail cord and pull to tighten your square knot.

  5. Mirror steps #1-4: Cross the left tail over the center cord.

  6. The right side of the cord goes over the left side cord.

  7. Then, the right cord will pass under the center cord and up through the left side loop.

  8. Repeat steps #1-7 until bracelet reaches desired length.

Spiral Macrame Bracelet

  1. To create a macrame bracelet with a spiral look, you will complete steps #1-4 above.

  2. Instead of switching to the left tail, continue to repeat the same knot on the right side. After a few knots, you will start to see the spiral develop.

Finishing a Macrame Bracelet

Once you are ready to finish your macrame bracelet, you will create a loop at the end, where you can attach a lobster clasp to connect to either your decorative link, or the beginning loop.

  1. Take your core threads and fold them over close to the end of your last square knot to see how long you would like your loop to be.

  2. Twice that length away from the end of your last square knot, tie a simple knot in your core cords. Fold your cord so there is a loop at the end of the bracelet.

  3. Tie the outer cords over the top of the knot. This will ensure that the loop will not slide open.

  4. Place a dab of super glue beneath the knot for extra durability.

  5. Trim the tails of your cord.

  6. Open a jump ring and slide a lobster clasp onto the ring.

  7. Connect the jump ring to your decorative link, or the beginning loop of your bracelet, and close the ring.

  8. Enjoy your new bracelet!
